The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has strongly condemned the troubling case of gender-based violence in Narok County after a viral video surfaced showing a woman allegedly being beaten by her brothers over what is believed to be a forced marriage.
In a statement by Chairperson Leah Sankaire, the association expressed deep concern over the incident, terming it a disturbing reminder of the persistent dangers women and girls face in Kenya despite ongoing efforts to curb such abuses.
In the viral video, where police have since confirmed occurred in Mbenge, Ngarite area of Narok Central Sub-County, four men are seen pushing her before beating her as she screams for mercy and help.
Despite her painful cries, the men continue to cane her with no one coming to her aid.
KEWOPA described the assault as “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” saying it not only violates the dignity and rights of women but also undermines the fabric of society.
The group pointed out that forced marriages, intimidation, and violence against women are retrogressive practices that have no place in modern Kenya.
“Such conduct not only violates the dignity and fundamental rights of women, but also undermines the very fabric of our society,” the Kajiado woman representative said.
According to the statement, such acts perpetuate gender-based violence and must be met with the full force of the law, regardless of family ties or claims of cultural tradition.
The association announced that it is actively following up on the case and will work with relevant security agencies to ensure thorough investigations and swift justice.
It said the matter should serve as a warning to perpetrators of violence against women and girls that cultural excuses will not shield them from legal consequences.
KEWOPA also called on community leaders, elders, and families to take a firm stand against harmful practices like forced marriages.
“These outdated traditions have no place in our society and only serve to endanger the lives, dignity and future of women and girls,” the statement noted, adding that protecting women is not only a legal duty but a moral and social obligation that strengthens communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to women’s rights, KEWOPA pledged
to continue advocating for a society where every woman can live free from fear,
violence, and coercion.
One suspect linked to the brutal assault has since been arrested, even as a manhunt for additional perpetrators continues.
