Speaker Moses Wetangula during a parliamentary session
The National Assembly has paid tribute to former Kilgoris MP and Cabinet Minister Gideon Sitelu Konchellah, with Speaker Moses Wetang'ula leading lawmakers in honouring his contribution to Kenya’s parliamentary and public service history.
In a condolence message relayed through parliamentary channels, Wetang’ula described Konchellah as a distinguished leader whose service as a legislator and Cabinet Minister left a lasting impact on the country’s political landscape.
“I have learnt with deep sorrow of the passing on of Gideon Konchellah, a distinguished leader and seasoned legislator whose contribution to Kenya’s political landscape will be remembered,” Wetang’ula said, while extending his sympathies to the family and residents of Kilgoris Constituency.
Konchellah served as Kilgoris MP for multiple terms between 2003 and 2022 and also held a ministerial position in the Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki.
According to the Speaker, Parliament has lost a leader who played a significant role in legislative development and national service during his years in public office.
Members of Parliament from across the political divide also joined in mourning the former legislator, describing him as a leader who combined parliamentary experience with executive responsibility.
Lawmakers noted his role in overseeing reforms in immigration and refugee management and said his decades of service reflected continuity in Kenya’s political leadership.
Parliament observed a moment of tribute in his honour, with members standing in silence as a sign of respect.
Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to honour Konchellah’s memory by appreciating his contribution to strengthening legislative institutions and public service, while emphasising unity during the period of mourning.
Konchellah’s death was confirmed by Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli, who described him as a significant figure in the constituency’s political development.
The Speaker is expected to coordinate with the family and former colleagues of the late legislator on burial arrangements.
